in the portrait

Mon Jul 9, 2007, 5:05 PM
I just realised that now that my cegep is completely over, I've been loosing my interest for my abstract style... I feel like I've explored enough for now with abstraction, and recently regain interest for the portrait and the realist style.

I've read and did the famous book 'Drawing on the right side of the brain'. It helped me to get back to drawing. But I don't want to do real realistic/photographic drawing, it's not interesting at all.

So, I've decided to start a serie of experimental and emotive portraits. I asked my friends for the models and pictures. The fact that I know them well inspire me to paint their personnality :-)

I wish I had more time for art...There so much things I want to explore at the moment. I have a pile of interesting books to read, I want to paint, draw, and write poesy and thougts! But just have a few hours between job and bed. I hate to feel artisticly restrain by time.
I feel like I won't produce a lot, but hey, it's busy summer!

cheers friends!

Je veux participer à ton projet! J'avais lu ton email et ça m'avait beaucoup intéressée! Mais évidemment, la procrastination a fait en sorte que j'avais oublié ^^;

i sometimes get itchy feet as far as abstract painting is concerned, and want to try something else,
but there is always that fear within me that it wont work out.
i know it doesn't matter and that i'll end up covering the failed up and no-one will ever know,
but there is still that feeling,

i've been asked to paint a picture of a horse for a friend of my mum's
so that will be a change for me,

i always envy people who can paint people,
maybe i just need to practice,

i cant wait to see what you come up with

Abstract power :P

I think that the base is really drawing. You can paint well without drawing abilites, especially abstract paintings! But when turning to figurative, it can be quite frustating. Usually it's because of some lack of abilities in drawing.

I don't know if it's your case, I have not seen your drawings. But my advice yould be that you start praticing drawing first and then painting. Especially with the horse project, it might be a good idea to look at pictures, books and do some esquisses and sketches on horses, just to understant the lines, shapes and mass.
For sure, I recomend you the book 'Drawing on the right side of the brain'

That was just some advices, I've been trough this way, learning to draw before painting and improving and praticing a lot, that's why I can do portraits today, 3 years ago they were awfull ;P

Keep it up!! :-)

cheers,
i'll definatley look up that book,
i have done no drawing, other than doodles, but i know i suck at it,

abstracts can be taken a number of ways, which makes it easier
portrait painting actually has to look like a person, its so much harder, and i have a lot of respect for people who can do it,

Awwwhhhh tu VEUX me dessiner!!! ^^ :glomp:
